The play with recurring motifs can be found in architecture as well as in electronic dance music. Monumental, gray, brutal: the concrete architecture of the 1950s and 1960s, revived as an aesthetic interface in the Darkwave and EBM of the 80s, then ushered into the background, only to be currently more in vogue than ever. In both respects the rough design in its formability and functionality offers almost unlimited possibilities for creative architecture. You can see it at Boston City Hall or the Central Market building in the Tanzanian port city of Dar-es-Salaam and can be heard on Edward Ean's Darker Than Black EP. Hypnotic and reduced to a few, gripping elements, the 3-tracker is defined by its dancefloor attitude. A comparable approach is the individual class in the DJ sets by Modig. Brutalism, like a champagne brut, here stands for a harsh and uncommonly direct feeling in the mouth. Is concrete the building material of a new beginning and liberation? Come by and find out.
