Japan's Kansai area around the metropolis of Osaka and the old imperial capital of Kyoto has been a steady competitor to the Tokyo agglomeration. The quirky music scene centers around a dense network of record shops, bars, clubs and festivals and is unusually integrated across the board, presenting a range from jazz to disco to house / techno to footwork, often all in close sequence.
Ryoma Sasaki is one of the figureheads connecting the scenes of Kyoto and Osaka. Having operated the legendary but now defunct Transit Record store in Kyoto (with opening hours truly suitable for DJs: 8pm – 4am) as well as the label of the same name, Ryoma-san has been collecting records since the 1980s. With the monthly 'Connected Underground' nights at Kyoto's emblematic Metro club he hosts one of the region's longest running residencies, with a regular offshoot at Osaka's Noon club.
