Sculpting in time. That\'s what sound waves do when they compress and stretch the ether and alter your perception. That\'s what the social sculpture that we call the dance floor is all about. Andrei Tarkovsky coined the term. It was the title of a book published shortly before his death in 1986 that represents his legacy as a filmmaker and his vision of the world as a whole. For Tarkovsky, time was the primary matter of art and of any experience.
HÜMA UTKU holds a degree in psychology and now transposes her expertise into sound. ALI M. DEMIREL studied nuclear engineering before pursuing art. BALKAN KARIŞMAN focuses on real-time visualization to envision the future ahead of us. The three of them share an interest in mythology and in Tarkovsky\'s philosophy and have deepened their common practice of time-sculpting in a 2019 residency in Mardin, Turkey.
HÜMA UTKU\'s latest album, The Psychologist, was released on Editions Mego in 2022. She explores how sound textures and rhythm can evoke a sense of ancient within advanced electronic music. With a disregard for genres she fuses field recordings, acoustic instruments, and atmospheric ambience into harmonious noise and ritualistic rhythms. ALI M. DEMIREL is currently working on a series that connects nature and myth through an exploration of specific geographies where notable mythologies emerged. His recent video installations are reflecting on post-apocalyptic scenarios, imagining how structures live without the humans they were originally designed for. At Kookoo, video artist BALKAN KARIŞMAN uses Demirel\'s images and manipulates them live in parallel to Utku\'s sound performance.
In her artwork, CARLY FISCHER meditates on time sculpting matter: a concrete building block, in this case, decomposed and thus morphed into new forms by this most remorseless of primal forces. YUKIHIRO TAGUCHI presents new paintings developed in an intricate and time-consuming process. Kookoo hosts MIEKO SUZUKI and ARA try to capture the specific time-based qualities of music. As one of the characters in Tarkovsky\'s Solaris put it when talking about love: we can experience, but never explain.
