Writing about music is like dancing about architecture, so they say. And right they are. 'Cause who would ever want to dance about in a total non-space? Music is all about architecture. It surrounds you, it is made of texture and structure, it creates material realities, it builds an environment in every sense of the word (and may that word even be written).

PAUL PURGAS is a builder. He creates spaces. Trained as an architect, the Welsh-born artist is responsible for some of the thickest, roughest walls of electromagnetic waves you can imagine. With EMPTYSET, his joint project with James Ginzburg, as well as in his own work, PURGAS deals with the very basal elements of sonic building blocks – noise, signals, repetition, frequency – and tests their impact on any given physical surrounding.

Through releases on the labels Raster-Noton and Subtext, works for institutions like Tate Britain and Spike Island, interventions in a disused Welsh nuclear power station and in abandoned English mines dating back to the 13th century, PURGAS has learned a great deal about matter and about spaces. He works with pure material. That's difficult to capture with words, true that. But almost impossible not to be moved by, or rather: shaken. Test the impact for yourselves! At KOOKOO, on November 4, PAUL PURGAS will play an unusually long DJ set (at least for Welsh building standards).

CHLOÉ GUERBOIS and DAVIDE LUCIANI will lend a hand in the construction works at OHM Gallery. They are builders in their own right. Using broken mirrors and acrylic glass, mapping and projections, GUERBOIS and LUCIANI form an intricate network of luminous beams. An interconnection of rays, saturating the atmosphere, defining a new space within the space of OHM Gallery through the endless reflections of light.

Eager to welcome you in this environment of dark sonic matter and radiant light are KOOKOO's residents: fine artists YUKIHIRO TAGUCHI and CARLY FISCHER as well as your hosts MIEKO SUZUKI & ARA. Let's put an old mason's saying to the test: the harder we fight the higher the wall...

Let's go KOOKOO!
