Anyone who has spent the last 20 years more intimately involved with house and techno in Germany and its DJ culture has had a hard time getting past his name: Spunky aka Reinhard Spunkner (aka Paddy as he is called by his closest friends). Born and raised in the Saxon capital city of Dresden, he is thoroughly rooted in the club and underground scene of the city
From 2004 to 2010, he ran the record store Backstock Records. "So that the good records find their way to the Elbe," he says. Backstock Records provided a platform where like-minded people could meet and exchange ideas, Djs, record collectors and clubbers alike. Backstock Records also hosted parties, bringing big-name DJs like Osunlade, Cassy and Detroit's Mike Grant and Mike Huckaby to the Elbe.
Spunky got into DJing through his buddy Tiney. "I saw him djing, we got in touch and became friends. I literally learned how to DJ from him," he says. The friendship, the passion for disco, house and techno brings them together to the turntables - as Hombres Discos. "At one point it was about a party series called Cosmic Dancer at the Old Betting Office. That's where this fun name came from.
Ask Spunky about his musical influences and he doesn't have to think twice. "Chicago, Detroit, New York, but also synthpop and new wave from bands like Depeche Mode and Joy Divison," he says. But funk, soul, rare grooves and jazz records also rank high with him. "I'm a record collector." It's not for nothing that his colleagues call him a "DJ's DJ," which in the djing guild can be considered the highest honor.
Support comes as always from Headroom's head honcho Phonatic.
