Once a year, almost always in March, the Hebrew calendar brings us a very special kind of event. So special, that even for us at the "Karneval de Purim" it is still extremely difficult to explain how can a religious holiday generate a celebration of freedom, openness, foolishness and tolerance.
For non Jews, it is often incomprehensible, that Jewish identity can exist independently from Jewish religion. Many of us who define ourselves as Jews and celebrate Jewish holidays may very well be complete atheists and fierce opposers to the notion of religion and its institutions. However, here it is vital to separate religion from tradition and folklore. The Karneval de Purim project was semi-accidently born in order to emphasize the latter. It is a dancing proof for the ability of an inclusive, open-minded and free spirited tradition to exist outside the exclusive, inflexible definitions of the religious structures. Try to think of it as celebrating Christmas, without seeing any religious aspect to it at all. It remains, therefore, a matter of free choice.
Now, enough with the heaviness, after all, Purim is pure fun and once again we gather for a 12 hours extravaganza, in which Jewish folklore meets the Berliner club scene, and music from the middle east is being played parallel to iconic Berliner house music.
This edition of Karneval de Purim will begin earlier, with a series of concerts and live performances on our "Wedding Floor". Later, when the early birds are already warmed up, we shall start with the party program, stretching all together over about 12 hours. Not anywhere near the weeklong rave that is mentioned in the Esther Scroll and its tale of Purim, yet close enough.
Many surprises are waiting for you in the program this year. We shall reveal them slowly slowly, so that from now on and until March 23rd, you'll keep us in your minds and hearts.
One thing is for sure: the Karneval de Purim will keep to its tradition of being one of Berlin's most unique club-nights and welcomes open-minded, human-loving guests from any religion, nationality, ethnicity, sexuality and hummus serving preference.
Stay tuned friends, magical moments are yet to come.
