"On the 15th of March, one of the fiercest recorded tropical cyclones boarded central Mozambique’s shores. The long-lived storm generated maximum sustained winds of up to 195km/h coupled with torrential downpours severely affecting parts of Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Malawi. Ranked as the third most severe tropical cyclone on record, the scale of the devastation left in its wake is difficult to comprehend from afar; 90% of Beira, Mozambique’s fourth largest city destroyed, mass flooding stretching 2,165 km2 (more than DOUBLE the size of Berlin) causing mass displacement of more than 100,000 people, and taking the lives of more than 1000. It’s an event that will forever be marked in the Mozambican collective conscience, for more than a single reason.

Even within the eye of the desperation and devastation faced by the victims of the cyclone, the unprecedented sense of solidarity and unity that engulfed the country in the days following laid bare an inspiring sense of resilience and unity in the midst of literal and figurative darkness. Mozambicans from north and south, of different religious backgrounds, colors and cultures came together to assist with alleviation efforts; grassroots programs as well as individual efforts springing up practically overnight. It’s in this spirit that the RISE for Mozambique event is hosted, a collaborative project by RISE, HEKAYA, Perspectiv Arts Kollectiv and Fundação Fernando Leite Couto as a means of generating awareness and funds to be implemented on the ground. The team will be working hand in hand with Fundação Fernando Leite Couto as they head the reconstruction of Escola Primária Completa heroís Moçambicanos, Beira city and Escola Primária Monte Siluvo, Nhamatanda District.

Join us as we RISE for Mozambique, in celebration of unity and in solidarity with our brothers and sisters from Mozambique."
